Fill Light explained simply
What is โFill Lightโ?
Light used to brighten shadows made by the key light, usually without becoming the dominant direction.
- 01Key light
- 02Shadow side
- 03Add gentle fill
How do you use Fill Light practically?
A small exercise
Photograph a subject with one side light, then add a white reflector on the shadow side. Compare the shadow depth.
- Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
- Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
- Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.
How does Fill Light solve a problem?
It helps keep facial or product details visible when the key light creates shadows that are too dark.
What can go wrong?
Too much fill can flatten the picture. Add only enough to support the intended shape.
How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?
Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.
Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?
Key light โ Shadow side โ Add gentle fill. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
