Wide-angle Lens explained simply
What is “Wide-angle Lens”?
A lens that shows a broad view of the scene for a given camera format.
- 01Broad scene
- 02Watch the edges
- 03Keep camera level
How do you use Wide-angle Lens practically?
A small exercise
Photograph a room with a wide lens, keeping the camera level. Place a person in the centre and then near the edge to compare shape.
- Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
- Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
- Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.
How does Wide-angle Lens solve a problem?
It can show an entire studio or include a subject’s surroundings in a portrait.
What can go wrong?
Getting very close can exaggerate nearby features. Edge stretching and tilted verticals need attention.
How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?
Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.
Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?
Broad scene → Watch the edges → Keep camera level. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
