Diffusion explained simply
What is โDiffusionโ?
Spreading or scattering light through a suitable material to change its distribution and often increase the effective source size.
- 01Light source
- 02Diffusion material
- 03Broader illumination
How do you use Diffusion practically?
A small exercise
Photograph an object with a light, then add a proper diffusion panel at a safe distance. Compare reflections and shadow edges.
- Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
- Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
- Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.
How does Diffusion solve a problem?
It can turn a small bright reflection into a larger, more controlled highlight on a shiny product.
What can go wrong?
Diffusion reduces light output and must be suitable for the lamp’s heat and mounting method.
How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?
Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.
Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?
Light source โ Diffusion material โ Broader illumination. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
