What is โFlash Durationโ?
How long a flash burst lasts. A shorter useful burst can freeze movement when flash dominates the exposure.

How do you use Flash Duration practically?
A small exercise
With a suitable flash, photograph a safely moving object at two power settings. Compare blur while keeping ambient light low.
- Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
- Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
- Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.
How does Flash Duration solve a problem?
It helps explain why a studio action photograph can blur despite a camera shutter set at sync speed.
What can go wrong?
Manufacturers may quote different duration measurements. Ambient light and the flash’s trailing output also affect blur.
How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?
Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.
