Dodge and Burn explained simply
What is “Dodge and Burn”?
Selective brightening and darkening of areas to guide attention or refine shape.
- 01Dodge: brighten
- 02Burn: darken
- 03Balance the shape
How do you use Dodge and Burn practically?
A small exercise
Gently brighten a subject detail and darken a distracting edge on reversible layers. Compare the whole image at normal size.
- Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
- Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
- Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.
How does Dodge and Burn solve a problem?
It can strengthen form and attention without changing every part of the photograph equally.
What can go wrong?
Heavy local edits can create patches or halos. Keep transitions gradual and the lighting believable.
How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?
Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.
Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?
Dodge: brighten → Burn: darken → Balance the shape. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
