Continuous Autofocus explained simply

What is “Continuous Autofocus”?

An autofocus mode that keeps updating focus while the focus command is active. It is often called AF-C or Servo.

  1. 01Subject moves
  2. 02Focus updates
  3. 03Check the sequence
Visual reminder: Subject moves → Focus updates → Check the sequence. The illustration is a learning aid; use the practical exercise below to see the effect in a real photograph.

How do you use Continuous Autofocus practically?

A small exercise

Photograph someone walking slowly towards the camera. Keep the focus command active and inspect a short sequence.

  1. Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
  2. Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
  3. Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.

How does Continuous Autofocus solve a problem?

It helps maintain focus when the distance between camera and subject keeps changing.

What can go wrong?

Tracking is not perfect. Choose a suitable focus area, enough shutter speed and a clear subject.

How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?

Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.

Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?

Subject moves → Focus updates → Check the sequence. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
