JPEG explained simply

What is “JPEG”?

A common image format that uses lossy compression to keep files relatively small and easy to share.

  1. 01Finished image
  2. 02Smaller file
  3. 03Check compression
Visual reminder: Finished image → Smaller file → Check compression. The illustration is a learning aid; use the practical exercise below to see the effect in a real photograph.

How do you use JPEG practically?

A small exercise

Export one edited photograph at high and lower JPEG quality. Compare file size and fine edges at the intended viewing size.

  1. Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
  2. Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
  3. Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.

How does JPEG solve a problem?

It provides widely compatible delivery files for websites, emails and many print workflows.

What can go wrong?

Repeatedly saving edited JPEGs can add compression damage. Keep a master and export fresh copies.

How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?

Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.

Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?

Finished image → Smaller file → Check compression. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
