Layer Mask explained simply
What is “Layer Mask”?
A control that hides or reveals parts of a layer without erasing them. In common workflows, white reveals and black hides.
- 01White reveals
- 02Black hides
- 03Soft edges blend
How do you use Layer Mask practically?
A small exercise
Add a mask to an adjustment layer and hide the adjustment from the background. Toggle the mask to compare.
- Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
- Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
- Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.
How does Layer Mask solve a problem?
It lets you change a subject separately from its surroundings while keeping the edit reversible.
What can go wrong?
A rough mask edge can create halos. Check transitions at full size and at delivery size.
How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?
Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.
Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?
White reveals → Black hides → Soft edges blend. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
