Octabox explained simply
What is โOctaboxโ?
A softbox with an eight-sided front, often used to create a broad light source and a rounded-looking catchlight.
- 01Eight-sided front
- 02Broad source
- 03Rounded catchlight
How do you use Octabox practically?
A small exercise
Compare an octabox close to and farther from a portrait subject. Look at shadows and the reflection in the eyes.
- Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
- Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
- Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.
How does Octabox solve a problem?
It can provide a broad portrait light with a catchlight shape you prefer.
What can go wrong?
Its shape alone does not make the light flattering. Size, distance and angle matter more.
How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?
Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.
Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?
Eight-sided front โ Broad source โ Rounded catchlight. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
