High-speed Sync explained simply

What is โ€œHigh-speed Syncโ€?

A flash method that pulses or extends illumination while a shutter slit travels across the sensor, allowing supported faster shutter speeds.

  1. 01Fast shutter slit
  2. 02Extended flash output
  3. 03Reduced range
Visual reminder: Fast shutter slit โ†’ Extended flash output โ†’ Reduced range. The illustration is a learning aid; use the practical exercise below to see the effect in a real photograph.

How do you use High-speed Sync practically?

A small exercise

Use compatible camera and flash equipment to compare a portrait at normal sync and a faster supported HSS setting.

  1. Make a starting version and keep it so you can compare fairly.
  2. Try the change in the exercise. Keep unrelated choices steady where the exercise allows.
  3. Compare the result at the size your viewer will actually see. Write down what changed and whether it helped.

How does High-speed Sync solve a problem?

It lets you use a wide aperture outdoors without exceeding normal sync in the usual flash mode.

What can go wrong?

Available flash power or effective range usually falls. Some camera shutter modes do not support it.

How do you turn the idea into a useful solution?

Start with the specific problem in your image or brief, try the exercise, and keep the version that meets that need. If the result is worse, return to the starting version and change one choice at a time.

Quick check: can you explain the three ideas in the diagram?

Fast shutter slit โ†’ Extended flash output โ†’ Reduced range. Explain how each relates to the exercise. Then compare the starting version with your result and choose the one that meets your brief.
