Sigma 50mm F1.4 CL DG brings a softer look to a compact prime

Sigma has announced the 50mm F1.4 CL DG | Contemporary, a full-frame prime for L-Mount and Sony E-mount. Revealed on 23 October 2026, it starts a new CL branch of the I series, with a planned release in early spring 2027.
Character, rather than clinical sharpness
Sigma says the optical design deliberately controls aberrations to give gentle softness within the focused area and smooth transitions into background blur. That is the manufacturer’s intended rendering, not a conclusion from our testing. It makes this an interesting announcement for portrait and editorial photographers looking for a different starting point from a highly corrected prime.
A new RDD (Rotary Direct Drive) autofocus actuator drives a whole-lens extension focusing system. Turning the focus ring during autofocus temporarily engages manual focus. The metal barrel includes distance and depth-of-field scales.

The practical details
Sigma lists a 375g weight, 52mm filter thread, 45cm minimum focusing distance and 14 rounded diaphragm blades. Length is 54mm for L-Mount and 56mm for Sony E. L-Mount gets black or silver finishes; Sony E is listed in black.
For a future portrait session at our London photography hire studio, compare rendering at the intended aperture and lighting before committing to a look. We have not tested this lens, and this report does not imply Cineview stocks it.
