Sony announced the ECM-W5 wireless microphone system on 14 October 2026, pairing two transmitters with a receiver. Its most useful idea for small video crews is recording 32-bit float audio directly alongside video on a compatible Sony camera, via the Multi Interface Shoe.

What matters for filmmakers?

According to Sony’s announcement, each transmitter includes 64GB of backup storage. The system also supports wireless monitoring with compatible Sony headphones and connection to suitable phones or computers using the supplied USB-C adapter.

There are important qualifications: 32-bit float operates at 48kHz, requires compatible equipment and cannot repair audio already clipped at the microphone input. Check Sony’s camera compatibility information before buying.

For an interview or branded-content shoot, plan audio monitoring alongside camera placement and talent preparation. Cineview’s studio facilities in Greenwich include a green room and separate preparation spaces, helping crews organise those parts of the day.
